Description
Like the bluebell, and snowdrop, the pretty yellow flowers of Lesser Celandine are a herald of spring..The flowers rise up from attractive, shiny, heart or kidney shaped, green leaves often seen carpeting the ground in shady damp places. Watch as they open in full sun and close in the rain or dark. An early source of nectar and pollen for bees and other insects. In Fife, it flowers in April. It self seeds readily but gets off to a quick start early in the year by drawing on the food stored in its underground tubers which are like tiny bunches of potatoes,
Buy a few pots and and have a go at propagating it by means of these tiny tubers. One tuber will give rise to many as in the potato.
To The Small Celandine by William Wordsworth
PANSIES, lilies, kingcups, daisies,
Let them live upon their praises;
Long as there's a sun that sets,
Primroses will have their glory;
Long as there are violets,
They will have a place in story:
There's a flower that shall be mine,
'Tis the little Celandine.
he asked for it to be carved on his tombstone. Unfortunately, the stonemason got it wrong and carved the completely unrelated Greater Celandine , with its poppy-like flower, instead.
